Today, I would like to talk about “STANCE”.
That may sound a bit odd but it is very important how you stand when you are singing. You need to have a good foundation! Your feet should be shoulder width apart and your knees should not be locked, allow them to be soft and ready to bend! This will give you a cushion and will allow you to move fluidly. I like to think of this as my “ninja” stance; solid yet relaxed and ready for action. Allow yourself to gently sway, get the feeling of the movement in your hips. When you take a step it is easier to keep your balance if you go back to the original solid stance.
This is the beginning of projection of the voice. The hips, thighs and knees are your power area. We will talk more about this when we discuss projection.
When you stand in your position of feet shoulder width apart and soft knees, you should also be aware of your shoulder position. Raise your shoulders and roll them back, let them hang loosely. Try to relax them. This is the beginning of the most important part of singing…Breathing Efficiently! I will talk about Breathing in the next blog.
